Our history

Most likely you have heard about the Tenuta San Rossore because it was the first property of the King of Italy, then the President of the Republic from 1956 to 1999. If you are a history buff, maybe you also know in the Middle Ages there were many monasteries in this area, including one dedicated to San Luxorio, later became San Rossore. From 1500 to 1700 the Medici family rented the land and bought, among other things, the Casale La Sterpaia. Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici started the reclamation of the last stretch of the Arno, which was moved furtherly to north by 2 kilometers. It is the so-called "Ferdinandeo Cut".

And it was Ferdinando II de' Medici, in 1622, who introduced the dromedaries inside the Farmhouse, which settled so well that they remained there until 1976, when, following the famine caused by the Second World War that had already decimated them, the last specimen died. In addition to the dromedaries, the Tenuta San Rossore over the centuries has also been populated by numerous horses: it was Leopold II of Lorraine who built the Hippodrome, called Prato degli Escoli. Since 1885, the most prestigious race held there is the Pisa Listed Race Prize reserved for three-year-old horses on 1,600 meters.
